Majuli Records First Inter-Country Adoption as US-Based Couple Adopts Two Brothers

Majuli district has witnessed its first-ever inter-country adoption, with a couple based in the United States adopting two brothers from the river island on Saturday.Rimpi Borah, coordinator of the Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA), Majuli, said the siblings, aged eight and seven, were formally handed over to the adoptive parents—an Indian-origin couple—during a ceremony held at the conference hall of the Majuli District Commissioner’s office complex.Majuli Deputy Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak officially completed the adoption process in the presence of district administration officials, police personnel, the District Child Protection Officer, and members of the Child Welfare Committee.

A representative of the Authorised Foreign Adoption Agency (AFAA), the foreign social welfare agency recognised by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) to facilitate international adoptions, was also present on the occasion. Borah said the two children had been residing at the Specialised Adoption Agency Centre since its establishment in 2024. The centre is currently run by an NGO, Surjudaya, and the State government has recently initiated steps to take over its management.

She added that the adoption was carried out strictly in accordance with established procedures. Prospective adoptive parents are required to apply through the CARA portal under the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. Once approved by CARA, the application is forwarded to the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA), after which the adoption is finalised following due verification and legal formalities.The adoption marks a significant milestone for Majuli in facilitating child welfare through international adoption mechanisms.
