Lgbi airport enhances landing safety with 570-metre precision approach lighting system

The Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati has commissioned a new 570-metre Precision Approach Lighting System (PALS), marking a significant enhancement to its approach and landing infrastructure.

The upgraded system strengthens aircraft operations during low-visibility conditions by providing pilots with improved visual references as they approach the runway.

Guwahati experiences seasonal weather challenges, including heavy monsoon rainfall and periods of reduced visibility that can impact flight operations. The newly commissioned PALS extends the airport’s approach lighting from the earlier 180 metres to 570 metres, delivering enhanced runway acquisition and approach support for arriving aircraft.

The new Precision Approach Lighting System offers several operational benefits:

• Earlier visual acquisition: Enables pilots to identify the runway environment sooner during approach.

• Improved approach accuracy: Assists in maintaining correct alignment with the runway centreline.
• Improved weather resilience: Supports flight operations during adverse weather conditions.

• Enhanced network reliability: Strengthens Guwahati Airport’s capability to serve as a critical air transport hub for Northeast India.

The project involved extensive planning, installation, calibration, testing and commissioning in compliance with applicable aviation safety and regulatory requirements.

The lighting infrastructure, associated electrical systems and photometric performance have been carefully engineered to provide consistent guidance to aircraft during approach operations.

The initiative forms part of the airport’s ongoing programme to modernise airside infrastructure, enhance operational efficiency and strengthen aviation safety standards.

As the primary aviation gateway for Northeast India, LGBI Airport plays a vital role in connecting the region with major destinations across India and abroad. Improved operational continuity during periods of reduced visibility will help minimise disruptions for passengers while supporting airlines through better schedule adherence and reduced diversion-related impacts.

The commissioning of the 570-metre PALS reflects the airport’s continued investment in infrastructure that enhances safety, operational performance and dependable connectivity for Assam and the wider Northeast region.
