The District Commissioner Office in Haflong hosted a program called “Advancing Community Safety: Landslide Risk Awareness and Preparedness” in their conference room. Numerous departments enthusiastically participated in the event, which was organized by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) Assam in partnership with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Dima Hasao. High-risk areas including Muolhoi, Khongsai, Fiangpui, Muolpong, Boildura, Topodisa, Longmang, Tularam Raji, Demalik Raji, Mahadev Tilla, and Jatinga were identified by the GSI team’s “Landslide Susceptibility Map” for the Haflong region.
The graphic highlighted the dangers of things like development along drainage lines, uncontrolled sewage disposal, disruption of natural drainage paths, and non-scientific land management. In his cordial welcome speech, Dr. Pankaj Jaiswal, the Deputy Director General (DDG) and Regional Mission Head (RMH-IV) for the North-East, emphasized the value of community safety and readiness in reducing the risk of landslides. Darinia C. War, Director of SU-Assam, echoed this feeling when she described the workshop’s objectives and emphasized the need for knowledge and preventative actions to reduce the risk of landslides.
The event focused on enhancing community resilience against natural disasters, with speakers discussing disaster preparedness strategies, landslide vulnerability, and the “Bhooskhalam Mobile App.” The interactive session led by Dr. Jaiswal focused on landslide management and future strategies for Haflong, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders to build a safer, more resilient community. The workshop was attended by ADC Sangeeta Devi ACS, along with officials from various departments and staff members.
