Kolkata paediatric expert urges meningitis vaccination amid rising child cases

Doctors in Kolkata have raised concern over meningitis, commonly known as brain fever, urging parents to prioritise vaccination following reports of high fatality among children under five globally. According to global figures, meningitis affects over 2.5 million people every year, with nearly 70% of deaths reported among young children.

Dr Soumitra Dutta, Senior Pediatric Consultant at Bhagirathi Neotia Woman and Child Care Centre, Kolkata, said vaccination remains the most effective protection. “Immunocompromised individuals, students, travellers, and those living in crowded environments should ensure timely vaccination,” he said, adding that higher vaccine coverage can indirectly protect vulnerable groups. India ranks among the top three countries with meningitis-related deaths, especially due to Neisseria Meningitidis bacteria. Despite treatment, the infection may result in a fatality rate of up to 15%, making prevention vital.

Paediatricians in Kolkata emphasise that parents should look out for key symptoms such as neck stiffness, high fever, confusion, headache or vomiting. Early diagnosis and vaccination between 9–23 months have been recommended by health bodies. Public health experts say increased awareness in cities like Kolkata could help reduce infection rates and ensure timely medical consultation among parents.
