The Vascular Society of India (VSI) organized a walkathon in Kolkata today to mark National Vascular Day, aiming to raise awareness about amputation prevention and vascular health. Over 100 residents participated in the event at Subhash Sarovar, joining a nationwide movement that saw 15,000 participants across 30 cities.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 million limb amputations occur globally each year, many of which are preventable through early intervention and management of risk factors. In India, vascular diseases, particularly diabetes, account for 40-50% of amputations. This underscores the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures.Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, Vascular Surgeon at Manipal Hospital, Kolkata, flagged off the walkathon, emphasizing the surge in diabetes cases and the resulting increase in preventable amputations. He highlighted the community’s commitment to fitness and awareness of vascular diseases. Dr. Tapish Sahu, Secretary of VSI, expressed optimism about the nationwide response, stressing the importance of a comprehensive vascular healthcare framework.
Dr. P C Gupta, President of VSI, lauded the event as a milestone in reducing preventable amputations in India. He emphasized the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and routine medical check-ups in preventing vascular diseases. The VSI, part of the World Federation of Vascular Societies, collaborates with medical professionals to save limbs and lives, boasting over 700 active members nationwide dedicated to this cause.
