Rabindra Nath Tagore Heart Institute (RTIICS) has marked a significant milestone in cardiac care by successfully implanting two dual-chamber leadless pacemakers on the same day, on October 8. The procedures, performed by Dr. Debdatta Bhattacharyya and his team, employed the latest AVEIR technology, positioning the institute as the first centre in Eastern India to offer such advanced cardiac rhythm management.
Unlike traditional pacemakers that require wires and chest incisions, the AVEIR system is entirely wireless and minimally invasive. Inserted via a thin catheter, the device is the size of a vitamin capsule, reduces post-surgical discomfort, lowers infection risk, and offers a lifespan of 18–20 years. Dual-chamber models allow synchronisation of both heart chambers, providing customised therapy for patients.
International collaboration underscored the achievement, with Dr. Cyrus Adel Hadadi of MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute, USA, sharing his expertise on leadless pacemaker technology. “The AVEIR system is a revolution in cardiac rhythm management, offering precision, safety, and improved quality of life,” said Dr. Bhattacharyya. In Kolkata, the adoption of AVEIR pacemakers is expected to boost cardiac healthcare demand, driving growth in premium cardiac devices and procedures. Local hospitals and clinics are preparing for higher patient footfall as awareness of minimally invasive options rises, potentially positioning Kolkata as a hub for advanced cardiac care in Eastern India.
