International Women’s Day was commemorated at Atal Udyan in Adabari, Guwahati, through an event titled Basantabilas, organized by Kolasamanway. This vibrant program featured discussions, music, poetry, and dance, celebrating womanhood and the arrival of spring. Dr. Sadhan Das, the chief guest, emphasized the significance of spring as a time of renewal, urging the audience to live purposefully given the limited meaningful time in life. He discouraged conflict and negativity in favor of harmony.
Dr. Rita Bhuiya, a gynaecologist and paediatrician, highlighted ongoing gender inequality, stressing that discrimination persists despite advancements in education. She pointed out troubling societal reactions based on the sex of newborns and the prevalence of sex-selective practices. Writer Manikuntala Bhattacharya criticized the slow societal change despite the yearly observance of Women’s Day. She advocated for self-defense training for girls and the pursuit of financial independence to empower women to challenge discrimination and superstition.
Professor Sudeshna Bhattacharya from Gauhati University reflected on historical practices in ancient India where men and women studied together. She questioned how discriminatory customs arose, arguing that understanding this history is vital for addressing contemporary inequalities. The event continued with a cultural evening, Phaguner Mohonay, celebrating spring through folk music and dance, culminating in a captivating performance, Ayorī Basanta, that embodied the festive spirit of Holi.
