The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) faced a significant crisis as Koch Rajbongshi leaders resigned en masse due to the party’s inaction on their long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This decision was made during a meeting in Chirang district, where members expressed disappointment over the party’s lack of a clear stance on the issue. Leaders from prominent Koch Rajbongshi organizations, including the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation and the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union, supported the resignations, stating the party president’s recent comments were insufficient. They called for the government to address the ST status demand without delay, especially in light of escalated tensions stemming from community protests. Concurrently, the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students’ Union criticized a ministerial report favoring ST status for six communities, claiming it divides their community and threatens public unrest. Furthermore, discrepancies in voter registration processes between Assam and other states were highlighted, raising concerns over citizenship documentation requirements amid ongoing illegal immigration issues.
