‘Kati Bihu’ the pious day, Assam celebrate it with following rituals

On Thursday, Assam observed Kati Bihu, which is also known as Kongali Bihu.  Assam follows all ancient conventions and ceremonies especially in this festival. Unlike the other two Bihus, Rongali and Bhogali, which are celebrated with pomp and splendor, Kati Bihu is distinguished by its simplicity and austerity.

Kati Bihu represents the lean phase of the year when crops have yet to mature. It is observed during the month of Kati on the Assamese calendar. People of Assam pray for healthy crops and future prosperity during this Bihu.  Locals burn clay lanterns in their homes’ courtyards next to Tulsi plants. While the farmers light elephant apple lamps and position them at the tips of tall bamboo poles in their paddy fields.

The locals called this ‘aakash banti’. As they believe that  aakash bantis are lighted to help ancestors reach heaven. They also serve a functional use by attracting insects to the flame, thereby safeguarding crops. In Guwahati, ladies conducted naam-kirtans at namghars throughout the city, praying for a happy year.
