JSW Group, Assam government to build world-class museum in Guwahati for Vrindavani Vastra

The JSW Group has joined hands with the Government of Assam to establish a world-class heritage museum in Guwahati, which will house the 17th-century devotional textile, the Vrindavani Vastra. Considered a cultural treasure created under the guidance of Srimanta Sankardev, the textile is currently preserved at the British Museum in London.

The British Museum has agreed to loan the Vrindavani Vastra to Assam for public display during 2026–27, where it will remain for 18 months. The Government of Assam has allotted land at Khanapara’s Sericulture Farm for the project, which will be fully funded by JSW Group. The museum will feature advanced climate-control systems and international standards of conservation.

In Guwahati, the project is expected to boost tourism and local business, particularly in hospitality, handicrafts, and retail sectors. Traders and shopkeepers anticipate a rise in domestic and international footfall once the Vastra goes on display, potentially making Guwahati a major hub for cultural tourism in the Northeast. JSW Foundation Chairperson Sangita Jindal said the initiative will bring the people of Assam closer to their heritage. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the project as a “long-cherished cultural aspiration.”
