JSW Group, Assam government join hands to establish world-class heritage museum in Guwahati

The JSW Group and the Government of Assam have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a state-of-the-art heritage museum in Guwahati, aimed at preserving and promoting Assam’s rich artistic legacy and facilitating global cultural exchange.

The museum will be constructed on a 45,000 square feet site at the Sericulture Farm in Khanapara, with land provided by the Assam government and full funding from the JSW Group. It will house national and international artefacts, travelling exhibitions, and cultural showcases. The inaugural exhibition will feature the VrindavaniVastra, a 17th-century devotional textile woven under the guidance of Srimanta Sankardev, currently preserved at the British Museum in London.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the collaboration, calling it “a source of immense pride for the State” and highlighting its potential to showcase Assamese heritage alongside global exhibitions. Mrs. Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of JSW Foundation, said the museum will provide a platform for global cultural engagement and preserve India’s artistic heritage. In Guwahati, the museum is expected to boost local tourism, create employment opportunities, and attract art enthusiasts and cultural tourists to the city, generating business for hotels, restaurants, and allied services. It is anticipated to become a cultural landmark that positions Guwahati as a hub for heritage tourism in Northeast India. The museum will include advanced climate control and security systems, ensuring long-term preservation of its artefacts and sustainable cultural collaboration between JSW and the Assam government.
