JMM Kicks Off Assam Election Campaign with First Slate of 21 Candidates

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) announced its first list of 21 candidates for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 on March 23, marking a strategic move to extend its influence beyond its Jharkhand stronghold. The list, signed by General Secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey, includes candidates from key constituencies across Upper Assam and reflects the party’s ambition to be a significant player in Assam’s multifaceted electoral arena.

Among the prominent nominees are Priti Rekha Barla from Mazbat, Teharu Gour from Biswanath, Amit Nag from Khumtai, and Bhubem Murari from Chabua, with additional candidates such as Phedicrson Hasda (Gossaigaon), Baldev Teli (Sonari), and Peter Minj (Duliajan), among others. The party has also included representatives for various constituencies, including Bharat Nayak (Digboi), Prabhat Das Panika (Bhergaon), Mahabir Baske (Tingkhong), and others.

Notably, JMM’s nomination of Pratapchandra Rangphar for the reserved Bokaijan (ST) constituency and Prabhakar Das from Khowang showcases its intent to reach tribal and tea garden communities. Political analysts suggest that this move reflects JMM’s calculated approach to broaden its voter base in Assam, appealing to groups with potential ideological similarities.

Despite being a regional player primarily in Jharkhand, JMM’s foray into Assam elections could reshape local political dynamics, particularly in areas with high Adivasi and tribal populations. However, the party is expected to encounter significant competition from established political entities such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress, and other regional groups.
