On October 6th, 2023, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held its first Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) in Guwahati to implement the Technical Cooperation Project for Bamboo Use Promotion in the Northeast region. The JCC included representatives from the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region, NECBDC, Northeast Centre for Technology Application and Reach, the Embassy of Japan, JICA, and academia like the National Institute of Design (NID) Assam to familiarize themselves with JICA experts’ activities and set goals for the project’s completion by 2025.
The bamboo industry is gaining global attention, offering North-eastern India a chance to become a key player and innovation hub. JICA, in collaboration with NECDBC, has sent a Japanese team to prepare projects since January 2023.
Japan and India are fostering a harmonious synergy between academia and industry through a collaborative effort on bamboo design research. Mr. SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative of JICA India, expressed his appreciation on this occasion, stating, “We are dedicated to executing this project with a strong commitment to fostering India’s social and economic development, promoting sustainability, and nurturing self-reliance in the region.”
