Jayanta Malla Baruah to Present Assam Budget on July 10

The first full budget of the second consecutive government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be presented in the Assam Legislative Assembly on July 10, according to the provisional business schedule issued by the Assembly Secretariat. The Budget Session of the Assembly will begin on July 6 and continue until July 31, with a total of 16 sittings scheduled during the session. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah will present the Annual Financial Statement containing the Budget Estimates for the financial year 2026-27. The budget is expected to outline the state government’s spending priorities, revenue proposals and development plans for the coming financial year.

The upcoming budget will be the first comprehensive financial statement of the BJP-led government after it returned to power for a second consecutive term following its victory in the recent Assembly elections. Earlier this year, ahead of the elections, then Finance Minister Ajanta Neog had presented a vote-on-account budget on February 17, proposing an interim expenditure of Rs 62,294.78 crore to meet routine government expenses until a full budget could be introduced after the formation of the new government. The full budget follows the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) decisive mandate in the Assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member House, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 82 seats to achieve its first-ever single-party majority in Assam. Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), won 10 seats each.

The Indian National Congress emerged as the principal opposition with 19 seats, while Raijor Dal secured two seats, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won two seats, and the All India Trinamool Congress captured one seat.
