Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Iwao Horii, and the Ambassador of Japan to India, Keiichi Ono, along with a Japanese delegation in Dispur on Friday evening. The meeting aimed to position Assam as a strategic destination for investment, with Chief Minister Sarma emphasizing the state’s burgeoning economic potential, investor-friendly policies, enhanced connectivity, and significant infrastructure developments. He also highlighted Assam’s role as a gateway to Southeast Asia as part of the Act East Policy.
Discussions centered on bolstering Japanese investment in various sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing, information technology, and semiconductor industries, as well as skill and sustainable development initiatives. The Minister noted that several Japanese companies are interested in the semiconductor project at Jagiroad. Additionally, the meeting considered how to expand cooperation to increase employment opportunities for the youth of Assam in Japan through Japanese language training.
Minister Iwao Horii extended an invitation for the Chief Minister to visit Japan to strengthen bilateral ties, while Chief Minister Sarma invited the Prime Minister of Japan and industry leaders to Assam to promote mutual friendship and examine the state’s investment opportunities. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Assam to enhance its economic and strategic partnership with Japan. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Assam Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota and Additional Chief Secretary Dr. KK Dwivedi.
