Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and large parts of North Bengal were shaken by the earthquake. The tremor was felt at 6:57 am on Thursday. The magnitude of the quake was 4.5 on the Richter scale. It is initially known that the source of the earthquake is 9 km away from Namchi in Sikkim. Tremors were also felt in neighboring Bhutan. However, no damage has been reported so far due to the earthquake.
Some meteorologists believe that the earthquake originates 10 kilometers below the surface. The epicenter was located 22 km from Darjeeling, near Rabangla in North Sikkim.
Many people are sleeping when the tremors are felt in the morning. Part of the residents came out of the house in fear. Rivers are overflowing in North Bengal due to heavy rains. The National Highway 10 from Siliguri to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, was closed for almost a month due to the collapse. Some fear new danger due to earthquakes in this situation. However, the Himalayan region is already prone to earthquakes. There have been several small and large earthquakes in the area adjacent to the Himalayas.
