The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) has renewed its commitment to accelerating renewable energy expansion in the North-Eastern region. Speaking at an event titled “Financing Renewable Energy in the North Eastern Region” in Guwahati, Chairman and Managing Director Pradip Kumar Das highlighted the region’s crucial role in India’s clean energy roadmap.
Shri Das informed that India’s renewable energy capacity has tripled since FY14 and is projected to double again by FY2030, requiring investment of around ₹28 lakh crore. The Northeast, he noted, holds tremendous green energy potential, particularly in hydropower and solar, with approximately 5 GW of renewable capacity already installed — nearly 60% of the region’s total power capacity. So far, IREDA has sanctioned over ₹3,500 crore in the Northeast, offering concessional financing, including a 50 basis points rebate for projects in the region and an additional 50 basis points concession for women-led initiatives. The agency has also backed key schemes such as PM-KUSUM and Rooftop Solar, supporting thousands of installations, including 3,800 solar pumps in Tripura and rooftop projects across Assam.
In Guwahati, industry stakeholders welcomed IREDA’s push, noting rising investor interest in solar rooftops, decentralized energy models, and green business parks. Experts believe enhanced grid connectivity and policy incentives will attract more clean energy entrepreneurs and MSMEs in Guwahati, strengthening Assam’s position as a renewable energy growth hub. Shri Das added that with better infrastructure and innovative financing mechanisms, the Northeast could emerge as a clean energy hub for India and neighboring regions, supported by strong local leadership, including many IREDA business heads hailing from the region.
