The Assam government has taken a significant step to improve education for indigenous pupils by designating Mising, Rabha, Karbi, Tiwa, Dimasa, and Deuri as the Foundational Stage’s Medium of Instruction (MoI) in schools. The Department of School Education made this announcement with the goal of enhancing the educational experience for kids who speak these languages. Beginning immediately, this program enables young children to get an education in their mother tongue.
The objective is to increase their participation and knowledge in the classroom while fostering a deeper awareness and connection to their cultural identities. Teaching in these languages will transition to a regional language as the medium of instruction after the Foundational Stage is finished. The goal of the change is to improve students’ overall educational development by teaching them to read and write in their home tongues as well as to become proficient in regional languages.
In addition, the Assamese language, which is a member of the Eastern Indo-Aryan group, has a rich history that reflects Assam’s cultural variety. Originating from Magadhi Prakrit, it became well-known throughout the Bhakti movement, particularly because to the writings of Srimanta Sankardeva. Assamese continues to play an active role in Assam’s cultural identity because to this status, which provides funding and support for study and promotion as well as internet forums and educational initiatives that are rekindling interest among the younger population.
