India’s First Nature-Themed Airport Terminal Comes Alive with TechnoStruct’s Digital Engineering

A new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, known as the “Bamboo Orchid,” has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This terminal, hailed as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, embodies the cultural and natural identity of Assam. With an investment of approximately ₹5,000 crore, it aims to enhance aviation connectivity in Northeast India, positioning the region as a gateway to Southeast Asia.

The terminal is built to accommodate around 13.1 million passengers annually and features architecture inspired by Assam’s iconic kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and native bamboo species. Techno Struct, a global design and construction technology firm specializing in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design Construction (VDC) services, played a pivotal role in the project’s execution.

The firm provided advanced BIM coordination throughout various construction phases, collaborating closely with contractors on components such as the arrival and departure façades, airside and cityside façades, and drywall works. Utilizing structured BIM methodologies, Techno Struct developed highly coordinated LOD 400 execution models to facilitate the translation of the complex architectural design into accurate, build-ready digital models.

In the post-construction phase, TechnoStruct also assisted in preparing LOD 500 as-built models integrated with asset coding, which will aid airport authorities in managing operations, maintenance, and long-term lifecycle planning more efficiently. Reflecting on the project, Roy Aniruddha, Founder and Chairman of TechnoStruct, emphasized that the Bamboo Orchid terminal embodies the future of infrastructure development, underscoring the company’s contribution to India’s aviation growth through advanced BIM technologies that promote precise coordination among design, construction, and long-term operational management.
