India launches first AI-enabled state university pilot at CCSU Meerut

The Government of India has announced the launch of the country’s first AI-enabled state university pilot at Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut, marking a major step towards integrating artificial intelligence into higher education and skilling ecosystems. The announcement was made by Jayant Chaudhary, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, at Google’s AI for Learning Forum in New Delhi. The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Google Cloud and CCSU, aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of a technology-driven Viksit Bharat 2047.

Under the pilot, CCSU will function as a national living laboratory for AI-first education, implementing personalised AI tutors, AI-driven skill-gap analysis and intelligent document processing to streamline administration. Learnings from the project are expected to benefit CCSU’s affiliated colleges and be scaled across India’s 45,000 colleges and over 1,200 universities.

Speaking at the forum, Chaudhary stressed the need to bridge the gap between degrees and employability, stating that AI can connect classroom learning with industry requirements and democratise access to skills beyond metropolitan centres. The Minister also highlighted alignment with the ₹60,000-crore Model ITI Scheme and called for greater teacher enablement, including extending AI support to Kendriya and Navodaya Vidyalayas. Google leaders reiterated their commitment to supporting population-scale, responsible AI adoption in education, positioning India as a model for inclusive AI solutions for the Global South.
