In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the Assam government has suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg following his arrest by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The suspension order, issued by the Governor of Assam, took effect immediately on Wednesday, October 8, and applies to Garg’s current posting as In-Charge Co-District Superintendent of Police, Boko-Chaygaon in Kamrup district.According to official sources, the move came hours after the officer was interrogated and taken into custody by the CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) at its headquarters in Guwahati. His arrest was made in connection with CID Police Station Case No. 18/2025, filed under Sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, with an additional charge under Section 103.
CID officials said that “sufficient and credible evidence” had emerged against DSP Garg during the interrogation, linking him to the ongoing probe into the singer’s death. The Chief Investigating Officer (CIO) confirmed that Garg was arrested at 10:56 AM on Wednesday and has been remanded to seven days of police custody by a local court. He is likely to be produced again on October 15, after which a decision will be made on his judicial remand.During his suspension, and in the event of his release from custody, Garg’s official headquarters will remain the Assam Police Headquarters in Ulubari, Guwahati, pending further review. The case took a dramatic turn after reports surfaced suggesting that Sandipan Garg was present on a yacht in Singapore at the time of Zubeen Garg’s untimely death, a revelation that has fueled speculation and intensified public scrutiny. While the CID has not disclosed the precise nature of Garg’s involvement, officials confirmed that his name appeared during the collection of international evidence.
Speaking to reporters, Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta said, “Today, we arrested Sandipan Garg and produced him before the court, seeking a 14-day police remand. Summons have also been issued to Assamese nationals currently residing in Singapore, including Rupkamal Kalita, who recorded his statement on Tuesday. As the concerned witnesses are overseas, we are proceeding under the India–Singapore Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, and the process is already underway.”
