In the Zubeen Garg death case, AASU requests a transparent investigation and rejects the SIT meeting

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Monday formally announced its decision to abstain from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) meeting probing the mysterious death of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. The student body cited legal reasons, emphasizing that participation could inadvertently provide advantages to the accused during ongoing judicial proceedings.

In an official statement, AASU president Utpal Sarma, general secretary Samiran Phukan, and chief advisor Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya said the union’s decision was made “consciously” after detailed consultations with senior advocates and jurists from the Gauhati High Court. The leadership clarified that the step was necessary to maintain impartiality and prevent misuse of their presence for legal gains.

The union also informed the SIT in writing, addressing the letter to Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, who is leading the investigation. AASU reiterated the deep concern of the people of Assam, who are “anxiously awaiting justice for the artist of the people, Zubeen Garg.” Calling for a “swift, transparent, and uncompromising” investigation, AASU stressed that the probe must uphold public faith, ensure accountability, and provide justice to the late singer’s family and admirers. The student organization urged authorities to act decisively, warning that delays or lapses could erode confidence in the legal process.
