The Indian government has proposed investing Rs. 10,000 crore to establish a new urea plant at Namrup, Assam. About 1,950 direct and indirect jobs would be created throughout the three-and-a-half-year project, according to Department of Fertilizers Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra. In her 2025–2026 Budget Address, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned the Namrup urea plant’s commissioning. Mishra emphasized the significance of this project for the Northeast, saying, “This is the most awaited project in the North East.” In order to address the fertilizer needs of Northeast and Eastern India, the new facility will generate 12.70 lakh tonnes of urea annually.
Mishra noted that excess supply will be exported to neighboring countries if demand permits. It is anticipated that India will produce 335 lakh tons of urea altogether after the Namrup facility is put into service, covering 75–80% of its needs and significantly reducing its reliance on imports. The facility will run on both imported and domestic natural gas, and plans are underway to start producing high-tech fertilizer products, including nanoparticles. In order to increase agricultural productivity in a sustainable way, Mishra also advocated for the balanced application of fertilizers.
