In Golaghat, Hemolota Handique Trust Starts the “My School Trees” Campaign

Kandhulimari Lower Primary School, situated in the West Block of the Golaghat district, hosted the launch of the Hemolota Handique Trust of Jorhat’s “My School Trees” (Mor School, Mor Gos) campaign. The youngsters were given an informative and instructive talk by Forest Officers Eastern Range Agoratoli Kalyan Deep Bora and Bibhu Choudhuri on the subject of “Flora and Fauna of Kaziranga National Park.” Additionally, local community people attended the presentation.

This project was started by the Trust to educate schoolchildren about the value of trees in protecting wildlife and their beneficial effects on reducing climate risk. The school’s students planted a number of trees, which are native to the Agoratoli Range and were chosen and donated by Kaziranga National Park. The Trust has given the saplings sturdy fencing materials, but more importantly, it has designated a local resource person known as “Mother Tree” (Brikkho Ma).

If any of the tree seedlings are not performing well, the school can seek a replacement and ask the “Mother Tree” for guidance and ideas regarding tree care. Rashmi Baruwa, a local from Kandhulimari village, has been chosen to be the “Mother Tree” of Kandhulimari Lower Primary School. Tapan Chandra Dutta, the Trust’s chairman and a former professor at Assam Agriculture University, has taken a number of steps to encourage kids to plant trees. Upanga Dutta and Gautam Barooah are the other trustees.
