In advance of the 2026 assembly elections, the EC mandates a special revision of Assam’s electoral records

In a significant move ahead of Assam’s assembly elections next year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday directed a ‘Special Revision’ of the state’s electoral rolls. This step is aimed at ensuring updated and accurate voter lists across the state.   In an official communication to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam, the Commission specified January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for the revision exercise. Election officials clarified that the Special Revision lies between the annual special summary revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), highlighting the Commission’s commitment to maintaining error-free and comprehensive electoral rolls before the polls.

This exercise will allow eligible voters who have recently reached voting age, as well as residents who have changed their constituency or address, to register or update their details. Citizens are urged to check their enrollment status and make necessary corrections well ahead of the elections. The ECI’s move follows last month’s announcement of SIR in states including Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, and the Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal are also scheduled for assembly elections in 2026. Assam is expected to receive a separate notification regarding its SIR in due course.

The Special Revision is considered crucial in preventing discrepancies, reducing voter exclusion, and strengthening the integrity of the democratic process. Officials have assured that all necessary measures, including awareness campaigns and voter facilitation centers, will be in place to assist residents during the process.
