Illegal immigration: Assam Govt plans tougher pushback drive next year

The Assam government plans to further intensify its crackdown on illegal infiltration in 2026, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserting that the state will not be allowed to become a ‘breeding ground’ for undocumented foreign nationals.
Reiterating his government’s hardline stance against illegal immigration, Sarma asserted that the state would intensify its pushback operations in 2026 after what he described as a major drive in the past year.
Taking to social media, the Chief Minister claimed that a “massive push back effort” was undertaken in 2025 to expel a large number of illegal Bangladeshi nationals from Assam.
“In 2025, we undertook a massive pushback effort to expel a huge number of illegal Bangladeshis back to their country. In 2026, we will be ruthless in this effort and PUSH BACK even more. Assam is not your breeding ground,” Sarma said.
Warning of tougher measures, the Chief Minister said the state administration would be “ruthless” in continuing the exercise in the coming year, signalling an escalation of enforcement measures.
He further claimed that 18 “unwanted guests” were pushed back across the border on Monday night, presenting it as part of an ongoing, sustained operation.
The renewed push-back announcement comes at a time when Assam is heading towards an Assembly election, with infiltration and border security expected to remain key political issues for the BJP-led state government, which has consistently projected its tough stance on illegal immigration as a core policy position.
Apart from intensified push-back drives, stricter monitoring along the India-Bangladesh border and legal action against facilitators of illegal entry would also be the norm in the coming months, sources said.
