IFFCO hails Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill as a game-changer for cooperatives

The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) has welcomed the approval of the Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill, 2025, calling it a landmark move to strengthen the rural economy and cooperative sector. The bill, passed in the LokSabha on March 26, marks the establishment of India’s first cooperative university, aiming to enhance self-employment, entrepreneurship, and professional development in the sector. Union Minister of Cooperation and Home Affairs Amit Shah, while announcing the bill, stated that it would set new benchmarks in innovation, research, and cooperative leadership. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s mission of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) and will empower cooperatives from local to global levels.

IFFCO Managing Director Dr. Udai Shanker Awasthi praised the initiative, calling it a historic step for Indian agriculture, farmers, and rural development. He highlighted that the university will offer sector-specific courses and short-term training programs, benefiting cooperative employees and professionals. IFFCO Chairman Dileep Sanghani added that the university would nurture the next generation of cooperative leaders, ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.

The university, expected to train over 8 lakh candidates annually, will act as a hub for cooperative education and research, with a curriculum developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Cooperation. International Cooperative Alliance Director General Jeroen Douglas welcomed the initiative, calling it a major step towards strengthening the global cooperative movement.
