As part of its overseas deployment to ASEAN countries, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vigraha is visiting Jakarta, Indonesia from December 02-05, 2025. This operational visit includes extensive activities such as professional interactions, tabletop exercises, shipboard drills, and joint training sessions between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Indonesian Coast Guard (BAKAMLA). These engagements focus on crucial areas like Maritime Law Enforcement, Marine Pollution Response, and Maritime Search and Rescue, emphasizing the need for cooperation due to shared responsibilities in large Exclusive Economic Zones and high maritime traffic.
The visit features a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) designed to enhance operational cohesion, communication, and seamanship coordination. Additional activities include courtesy calls, ship visits, yoga and sports, aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties and camaraderie among personnel. Both nations, as leading maritime democracies, are committed to upholding a Rules-Based International Order (RBIO) in the Indo-Pacific, with Coast Guard engagement critical to implementing this principle through routine enforcement and coordinated surveillance of sea lanes. A significant element of the India-Indonesia maritime partnership is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2020, which established a framework for cooperation in areas including law enforcement, coordinated patrols, and information sharing. This MoU has facilitated regular interactions, exchange of best practices, and improved interoperability during joint operations.
Over time, the ICG and BAKAMLA have maintained a tradition of cooperation marked by high-level visits, bilateral training, and coordinated maritime initiatives. The presence of ICGS Vigraha in Jakarta underlines India’s commitment to supporting maritime security and enhancing the capabilities of its partners. Following the Jakarta visit, ICGS Vigraha will proceed to Port Klang, Malaysia, as part of its operational deployment to ASEAN countries, aimed at fostering regional engagement and contributing to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
