In a significant stride to enhance Sikkim’s premium hospitality sector, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) inaugurated the foundation stone for the Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a luxurious 150-room hotel, during a formal event at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok. This project strategically aims to position the capital as a high-value tourism destination focused on luxury travelers, destination weddings, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions).
Tamang characterized the ceremony as a representation of trust and collaboration, commending the SM Group and Poddar Group for their investments and expressing gratitude to Hyatt Hotels Corporation for choosing Gangtok to expand its global brand. He emphasized the importance of tourism as a critical component of the state’s economy, noting that tourist numbers often double the state’s population. He expressed optimism that the new hotel would encapsulate Sikkim’s cultural essence by showcasing local art, cuisine, and talent.
Situated in the Mintokgang area within a mixed-use development about 2 km from MG Marg, the hotel’s location provides easy access to significant landmarks, including Enchey Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and lies along State Highway 310, the route to Nathu La Pass. With over 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2025, including more than 71,000 international visitors, the hotel is poised to fill a gap in the premium accommodation market, catering to high-budget domestic and international visitors.
Developed by Gyalshing Hotels Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle under SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, the hotel will follow global design standards, as stated by Vikas Agarwal, MD and CEO of SM Developers. Spanning 3.27 acres, the property is set to feature an array of amenities including an all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurant, bar, Regency Club, outdoor heated swimming pool, spa, gym, and family activity areas, alongside approximately 13,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, vital for promoting MICE tourism in the Eastern Himalayas. Furthermore, the integrated development will include a licensed casino, further bolstering Gangtok’s attractiveness as an entertainment destination.
Expected to host large-scale events, weddings, conventions, cultural showcases, and corporate meetings, the project aligns with national tourism frameworks like Swadesh Darshan 2.0. Additionally, it aims to generate substantial job opportunities, support local supply chains, and enhance sectors such as transport, handicrafts, and cultural tourism. Through this initiative, the Government of Sikkim seeks to draw responsible private investment while elevating Gangtok’s status as a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready tourism destination.
