Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 17 announced that the seat-sharing arrangement within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections is nearly finalised. As per the understanding, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is expected to contest 26 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest 11 seats. The remaining constituencies will be contested by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi after a key meeting on election strategy, Sarma said discussions were held regarding alliance coordination among the BJP and its partners, along with deliberations on the party’s candidate list.
He further stated that the BJP Central Parliamentary Board will convene at 7 PM on Wednesday to finalise the candidates. “The party is likely to release its list either tomorrow night or early the following morning,” he said.
Sarma also indicated that the BJP’s candidate list will include several new faces, with a particular focus on women and young leaders, reflecting efforts to broaden representation.
At the same time, he noted that a few sitting MLAs may be denied tickets due to changes in constituency boundaries following the recent delimitation exercise.
The development suggests that the ruling alliance has entered the final phase of preparations for the Assam Assembly elections, with candidate announcements expected soon.
