Relentless monsoon rains have triggered widespread landslides and flooding across Sikkim and adjoining districts of West Bengal, disrupting vital road links and severely impacting connectivity. The swelling Teesta river overflowed its embankments near 29 Mile, submerging a significant portion of National Highway-10 (NH-10) — the lifeline that connects Sikkim with Kalimpong and Darjeeling districts of West Bengal.Officials confirmed that a massive landslide at Tarkhola in Kalimpong district halted traffic movement between Sevoke and Rangpo, further worsening the situation. Another major slide occurred at Bardang between Singtam and Rangpo, blocking NH-10 completely. Due to continuous rainfall since Sunday, restoration efforts have been slowed significantly.
In Gangtok district, the Singtam-Dikchu Road has been rendered impassable following landslides at Tintek Khola and Kokaley. Authorities also reported disruptions on the Namthang–Namchi route due to a landslide at Phongla. The Pakyong district witnessed a massive landslide near the Turning Point leading to Chagelakha in Dalpachand. Roads have been buried under debris including soil, boulders, and uprooted trees. Meanwhile, Gangtok’s Pani House locality experienced a mudslide that buried several parked two-wheelers under debris.
Local authorities have urged travelers to avoid NH-10 and use alternative routes until the Teesta’s water levels recede and road restoration is completed. “All efforts are underway to clear blockages, but the intensity of rain and risk of further slides make the situation extremely challenging,” an official said. The disruption has already affected the flow of essential goods and emergency services, highlighting the region’s vulnerability during the monsoon. In markets like Gangtok and Rangpo, residents have reported shortages of fresh produce and rising prices due to supply chain interruptions.
