The process of making a broken knee functional again by removing the damaged component of the knee joint and replacing it with an artificial implant through Orthopedic surgery is known as “knee replacement.” This procedure is performed to reduce knee discomfort and restore knee function in osteoarthritis patients. Furthermore, as stated by Dr. Santanu Sarma in a press release on 9th April in Health City Hospital on the occasion of a CME titled “Recent trend and update in Knee Replacement surgery” being organised in Health City Hospital in association with Guwahati Orthopedic Society, this surgery improves the functionality of the knee in cases of Rheumatoid arthritis and knee injury.
According to Dr. Sarma, Consultant Orthopedician at Health City Hospital, this procedure was not popular in the North-East due to a lack of sufficient infrastructure and public awareness. However, such infrastructure is no longer lacking. In addition, the government has made facilities for patients to receive financial support through various schemes such as “Atal Amrit,” “Ayushman Bharat,” and others. The utilisation of new technology and equipment has reduced the cost and length of time required for such surgery.
In response to a question about CME (Continued Medical Education), Dr. Bhabananda Das, CMD of Health City Hospital, emphasised that medical science is not a static subject. Medical science becomes more dynamic and has new dimensions as a result of ongoing research and study. As a result of this ongoing research and study, sophisticated technology and treatment processes have been developed. He also stated that, in the past, patients had to wait at least 20 days for the outcomes of knee replacement surgery, but that this time, they are cured within one week.
Dr. Bhusan M Sabnis, a well-known unicompartmental knee replacement surgeon from Mumbai with an international reputation, and Dr. Pankaj Rai, an Orthopedic surgeon in the Indian Airforce, were both invited guests at this CME cum workshop. Dr. Bhusan spoke on knee replacement in young patients and athletes, while Dr. Pankaj Rai discussed the most recent developments in complex knee replacement surgery. More than a hundred graduate students of orthopaedic surgery and professors from Assam and the entire North-East participated in this CME and presented research papers, according to Paragjyoti Dutta, facility director of Health City Hospital.
