Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla has undertaken a four-day assessment from October 6 to 9 across landslide-affected regions of Darjeeling district, including Dudhiya, Mirik, Thurbo, Poobong, Pokhriabong, and Tabakoshi, to oversee relief and rehabilitation operations. In his capacity as President of the Darjeeling Welfare Society, Shringla coordinated the distribution of critical relief materials, including food supplies, blankets, utensils, tarpaulins, and spades, and extended financial assistance to families who lost loved ones and individuals seriously injured.
During the visit, Shringla, accompanied by West Bengal Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose for the Dudhiya inspection, recommended urgent measures including temporary Bailey Bridge installation at the collapsed Dudhiya Bridge over the Balasun River, housing support through Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin), and continued medical assistance for affected individuals. Strategic discussions with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and MP Raju Bista focused on coordinated efforts between central and state agencies for swift rehabilitation and infrastructure restoration.
In Darjeeling, landslide disruptions have impacted local trade and supply chains, delaying transport of essential goods and agricultural produce. Retailers and wholesalers in hilly towns reported operational challenges, while connectivity improvements and relief operations are expected to stabilize market activity and gradually revive commerce across Darjeeling district. Shringla reaffirmed his commitment to timely intervention, comprehensive support, and long-term rehabilitation for the affected communities.
