Guwahati Hosts Consumer Awareness Programme

The Consumer Awareness Bharat Yatra Programme took place at the Northeastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC) in Guwahati, marking a significant step in the nationwide initiative focused on fostering quality consciousness, standardization, and consumer protection throughout India. Organized by the Consumer Confederation of India (CCI) with support from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), this program runs from December 24, 2025, to March 15, aiming to enhance awareness about quality control, standardization, consumer rights, and the BIS’s role in safeguarding public interest.

At the event, Isaac Ginlaldin, Scientist and Joint Director at BIS, emphasized the importance of following Indian Standards and increasing public awareness regarding certification marks, notably the ISI Mark and Hallmark. He asserted that standardization is crucial for product safety, reliability, and instilling consumer confidence. Dr. Anant Sharma, the National Chairman of CCI, highlighted the necessity for active consumer participation to improve market accountability and facilitate informed choices. M. Selvraj, the National Working President of CCI, further elaborated on the Yatra’s objectives and its massive outreach across different states. Key figures, including Kailash Kumawat, National Director, and Sanjay Khandelwal, Secretary of CCI, reinforced the importance of collaboration among regulatory bodies, consumer organizations, and the public to cultivate a robust culture of quality.

The program engaged various stakeholders, including officials and consumer organizations, and featured interactive sessions designed to educate participants on consumer rights, grievance redressal mechanisms, and the critical nature of purchasing certified products. Overall, the event underscored a collective effort to empower consumers and enhance the standard of quality in the marketplace.
