In the run-up to Assam Assembly polls, unidentified miscreants hurled a grenade at the residence of BJP’s Sarupathar candidate and incumbent MLA Biswajit Phukan at Changpool in Golaghat district today.
However, a major disaster was averted as the grenade failed to explode. Phukan was not at the house at the time of the incident.
Police reached the spot soon after and have launched an investigation into the incident.
The incident has created panic and heightened tension in the constituency. Questions are being raised over how a grenade was thrown at the residence of a candidate amid tight security arrangements for the elections.
Senior police officials, along with a bomb disposal squad, rushed to the location to assess the situation. Police said the lever of the grenade is not yet found. Police are examining the CCTV footage for clues.
