All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union president Sunil Chhetri officially joined the Congress party, accompanied by key members of his union, including Rohan Limbu, Rajesh Bhuyan, Mukesh Thapa, Balaram Rai, and Subhash Limbu, during a formal event in Guwahati. Chhetri expressed that their collective decision is aimed at combating oppression and exploitation, asserting that only the Congress party can guarantee justice and dignity for all communities in Assam. The event saw attendance from prominent figures such as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, senior vice president Praneshwar Basumatary, and MLA Khaliluddin Mazumdar, among other senior leaders and party workers. Gaurav Gogoi emphasized the essential role of the Gorkha community in fostering a new and inclusive Assam, and he highlighted that Chhetri’s affiliation with the Congress would significantly bolster the party’s efforts against oppressive policies. Gogoi also pledged that Chhetri would be offered opportunities to engage with dignity and respect within the party, reinforcing the Congress’s commitment to inclusivity. The gathering was further supported by several other senior Congress leaders, including APCC general secretary Pradyut Bhuyan, Rituparna Konwar, Shantanu Bora, Meghnath Chhetri, and Udit Bhanu Das, showcasing a unified front in the political landscape of Assam.
