Godrej Agrovet Limited (GAVL) hosted the first ‘Women in Agriculture’ summit, a unique initiative celebrating women in the sector. The summit aimed to bring diverse perspectives and engage in thought-provoking conversations about women’s pivotal role in India’s agricultural sector. The goal is to improve employment opportunities and economic upliftment for 1 Lac women in the sector.
India’s agriculture sector is predominantly dominated by women, with 86.1 million women, or 60% of all female workers, employed in the sector. Rural India has an 84 percent female-dependent workforce. However, women continue to be outnumbered in agri-businesses, making it crucial to highlight the often overlooked role of women in Indian agriculture. This summit aims to highlight this disparity. Commenting on the summit and initiative taken by the company, Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director, GAVL, said, “Imparting them with the necessary knowledge, infrastructure and support will definitely help us enhance the overall agricultural output of the country.”
The panel discussion delved into skill gaps faced by women in the agri-food sector and explored educational and industry collaboration strategies to address these issues. It also emphasized the need for women to be promoted in leadership roles and the exchange of ideas to empower them in the industry.
