GI-Tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger Sent to London, Boosting Assam’s Agri-Export Drive

Assam has taken a major step in promoting its farm produce in the global market. The first export consignment of GI-tagged ginger from Karbi Anglong was flagged off to London on March 1. The consignment was formally sent from Krishi Bhawan in Guwahati by Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora. The flag-off ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Agriculture Department and other stakeholders connected with the farming and export sector. Officials described the move as an important development for the state’s agri-export efforts.

The ginger grown in Karbi Anglong has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This tag gives the product a special identity linked to its place of origin. It also ensures recognition in the market and helps maintain quality standards. With the GI tag, the product is expected to receive better acceptance and pricing in international markets. Agriculture department officials said that the export of GI-tagged ginger to London is part of the state government’s wider plan to promote Assam’s local agricultural produce abroad. The aim is to connect farmers with high-value export markets and create stable income opportunities for them.

Farmers and producer groups in Karbi Anglong are expected to benefit directly from this development. The export is likely to improve their income and encourage more organised cultivation and supply practices.
