Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of damaging the dignity of the Chief Minister’s chair through controversial remarks and unverified claims. Gogoi, in a series of sharp comments on social media, cited what he called “embarrassing instances” that, according to him, have eroded Sarma’s credibility among the people of Assam. The immediate flashpoint came when Gogoi reminded the public of Sarma’s earlier claim that he had seen a “body double” of Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Congress leader described the statement as both “baseless and laughable,” arguing that such claims reflect poorly on the highest office of the state. “The latest flop show is even bigger than the ‘RG body double,’” Gogoi remarked, dismissing the ruling party’s recent allegations against him.
In his post on September 11, Gogoi said, “I feel sorry for a Chief Minister whose words have lost all credibility and whose actions have made a mockery of the chair of the Chief Minister. People of Assam deserve better. People of Assam will get better. In 2026.” The statement made clear that the Congress leader intends to frame Sarma’s alleged failures as a major political issue in the run-up to the next Assembly elections. Gogoi’s remarks are being viewed as part of a larger strategy by the Congress to challenge the BJP’s dominance in Assam, particularly as the political climate in the state heats up ahead of the 2026 polls. The comments drew a fiery reaction from the ruling BJP. Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika hit back with personal attacks directed at Gogoi’s family. Hazarika alleged that Gogoi’s wife and children were not Indian citizens and went so far as to claim that the MP had tried to conceal links to Pakistan.
“I feel sorry for Congis who see you as their saviour,” Hazarika wrote. “In today’s Assam, we won’t let Miyas take control of us. The day Congress loses in 2026, you will run away to the UK.” The use of the term “Miyas” once again ignited debate, as it has been repeatedly criticized for being communal and divisive in Assam’s political discourse. The war of words comes at a time when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has reportedly submitted a 96-page report alleging links between Pakistani operatives and an Assam parliamentarian. Although the report does not name Gogoi directly, the political climate has been charged with speculation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself added to the controversy with an emotional social media post. “The true sorrow is not in the fall of a father, but in the silence of two innocent children—too young to know what has been taken from them. My prayers remain with them,” Sarma wrote on September 11.
