Gauhati High Court Chief attends Green Mizoram Day organised by Mizoram State Legal Services Authority

The Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) organised an awareness programme on the importance of mass tree plantation to mark Green Mizoram Day in Aizawl on Thursday.
Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and Patron-in-Chief of MSLSA, graced the event as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Justice Michael Zothankhuma (Judge, Judge-in-Charge of Administration Department (JAD), Gauhati High Court, and Executive Chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority) and Justice Sanjeev Kumar Sharma (Judge, Gauhati High Court). The theme for this year’s Green Mizoram Day is “Trees are green gold, The roots of all life.” To commemorate the day, the Chief Guest along with other officials planted tree saplings.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Justice Kumar noted that Green Mizoram Day originally began in 1998 as “Green Aizawl Day” and was later observed state-wide as “Green Mizoram Day” on June 11 every year starting from 1999. He highlighted that more than 4.6 million (46 lakh) saplings have been planted across various locations since the inception of this day.
Expressing his appreciation for this year’s theme, the Chief Justice emphasized that trees are incredibly valuable to us as they conserve groundwater, prevent soil erosion, and release clean air essential for life. He remarked that although Mizoram is a small state geographically within India, it is blessed with rich forests, diverse wildlife, and an excellent climate with clean, pleasant air. He stressed that it is vital to strictly protect and preserve the state’s flora, fauna, and forests.
During the event, Chief Justice Kumar planted a Herhse (Ironwood/Mesua ferrea) sapling near the Gauhati High Court, Aizawl Bench Office. Other officials present also took part in planting saplings to mark the occasion.
The program organized by MSLSA was chaired by Vincent Lalrokima, Member Secretary of the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority. The event witnessed a full attendance of Mizoram Judicial Officers, Law Department Officers, officials from the Gauhati High Court Aizawl Bench, members of the Mizoram Bar Association, and Law College students. Additionally, staff members of the Legal Services Authority also planted numerous saplings in the Ainawn locality.
