Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on April 6, amplified his political critique against the Congress party, alleging foreign interference and the use of false evidence. He cautioned senior Congress leaders about potential legal repercussions, including imprisonment. According to Sarma, the recent controversy has negatively impacted the Congress, with informal trends indicating an increase in projected seats for the NDA from 94 to 99. He declared that “Congress is finished in Assam,” highlighting a growing public support for the BJP-led alliance.
Sarma underscored the legal implications for Pawan Khera, stating that a police complaint has been filed, and the police will determine the course of action. He clarified that while Rahul Gandhi used the term “alleged,” the primary accountability rests with Khera. Sarma expressed that he was forewarned of the situation since March 27 and had informed a journalist that something would occur. He claimed the matter has been communicated to the Government of India.
In amplifying his accusations, Sarma questioned Congress leaders’ reliance on Pakistani social media and implicated Gaurav Gogoi in this connection, probing, “Why is Pakistan helping Gaurav Gogoi?” He alleged that Pakistan is trying to meddle in Assam’s electoral affairs, framing the situation as a national security concern. Drawing historical parallels, Sarma remarked that the Congress party has utilized similar controversial tactics in the past. He concluded by stating that his government would pursue legal avenues to address the allegations and ensure that those involved in fabricating and disseminating such accusations would be pursued under the law.
