Former Union Minister Biren Singh Engti No More

Former Union Minister and prominent political figure from Karbi Anglong, Biren Sing Engti, passed away at the age of 81 in a Guwahati hospital. Engti was a distinguished member of the Lok Sabha, serving five terms after winning elections in 1977, 1984, and 2009. He also held the position of Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound sorrow over Engti’s death, characterizing it as a significant loss for Assam. He praised Engti’s lifelong dedication to public service and contributions towards the development of the hill regions, extending heartfelt condolences to Engti’s family. Engti’s influence extended beyond his parliamentary roles; according to KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang, he was instrumental in shaping the political discourse in Karbi Anglong and fostering democratic engagement in the hill districts. He was acknowledged as a leader who profoundly represented the aspirations and identity of the Karbi people.

An educated and insightful leader, Engti held a master’s degree in political science and a Law degree from Gauhati University, following undergraduate studies at Nowgong College. Ronghang emphasized that Engti’s legacy of service and leadership would continue to resonate and inspire future generations, highlighting the loss felt not only in Karbi Anglong but throughout Assam’s political landscape. His contributions to society and the political realm will be remembered and honored by many.
