Former Pakistan chief justice nominated to be caretaker PM

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday proposed the title of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice (R) Gulzar Ahmed as Caretaker Prime Minister.

This comes after Pakistan President Alvi on Sunday night issued an order de-notifying Imran Khan as the country’s prime minister with immediate effect. However, President Alvi later issued some other orders, asking Imran Khan to continue as Prime Minister during the intervention until a “caretaker Prime Minister” was elected under Article 224A of the Constitution of Pakistan.

“In response to the President’s letter, after consultation and approval from the PTI Corps Committee, Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the put up of caretaker Prime Minister,” PTI tweeted.

Born in Karachi, Gulzar Ahmed was enrolled as an Advocate on January 18, 1986 and joined the High Court on April 4, 1988. He was recommended by the Supreme Court on September 15, 2001. Gulzar Ahmed was once elevated as a judge. Sindh High Court (SHC) on 27th August, 2002. He was notified as Senior Poisne Judge of the SHC on February 14, 2011 and elevated to the Supreme Court later that year.

On Sunday, April 3, Imran Khan survived an opposition attempt to remove him from power after a no-confidence motion against him was rejected by the National Assembly deputy speaker, who claimed it was a “foreign conspiracy”. Imran Khan then advised the President to dissolve the National Assembly.

Accordingly, the National Assembly has been dissolved and elections will be held in Pakistan within the next 90 days, according to the government.

Meanwhile, the opposition has relied on the Supreme Court, which is hearing the petition to dissolve the assembly.
