Former All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar on Wednesday stressed the need for greater inclusion of minority communities in senior administrative roles, stating that districts like Bongaigaon and Dhubri should have Deputy Commissioners from minority backgrounds. Sarkar made the remarks while addressing a cultural programme organised by the Tapattary Regional Youth Club at the Tapattary High School playground in Bongaigaon district. The event, held in the minority-populated Tapattary area, witnessed a significant turnout of local residents, especially youth. Although the programme showcased cultural activities, it also became a forum for Sarkar to voice strong social and political views centred on education, representation, and minority rights.
Highlighting education as the foundation of empowerment, he appealed to parents to place their children’s education above all other concerns, asserting that economic difficulties should never be an excuse to deny learning opportunities. In an emotionally charged statement that drew mixed reactions, Sarkar said that parents should be willing to make any sacrifice to ensure their children—both boys and girls—receive proper education so they can aspire to government positions in the future. He further maintained that districts with substantial minority populations should see administrative leadership that reflects their demographic reality. According to him, appointing Deputy Commissioners from minority communities in such areas would help address long-standing concerns and contribute to more inclusive and responsive governance.
Addressing issues of dignity and rights, Sarkar cautioned against any attempts to intimidate or marginalise minority communities, warning that such actions would be strongly opposed. While the programme concluded with cultural performances, Sarkar’s statements remained the central focus of the gathering, highlighting ongoing discussions around education, administrative representation, and the broader socio-political challenges faced by minority communities.
