Flipkart and SankalpTaru join hands to revitalize mangrove ecosystem in Sundarbans

Flipkart Foundation and SankalpTaru Foundation have embarked on a transformative project to restore the mangrove ecosystem in the Sundarbans, West Bengal. This ambitious initiative, named the ‘Community-Based Mangrove Plantation and Restoration’ project, aims to plant 35,000 mangrove saplings across 6 acres over the next three years.

Targeting the ecologically sensitive areas of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts along the Raimangal and Chota Kolagachia rivers, the project seeks to enhance coastal protection, improve water quality, and boost biodiversity. It also aims to benefit over 5,000 marginalized individuals who depend on climate-resilient agricultural and aquatic livelihoods.

Puja Trisal, Director of Flipkart Foundation, highlighted the initiative’s dual focus on environmental and community benefits: “By restoring the mangrove ecosystems in the Sundarbans, we are not only addressing the impacts of climate change but also creating economic opportunities for local communities.” Apurva Bhandari, Founder of SankalpTaru Foundation, praised the collaboration: “This partnership has significantly bolstered our mangrove restoration efforts, creating a vital green barrier that protects the ecosystem and local communities.”
