An FIR has been registered against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi at Pan Bazar Police Station in Assam’s capital city over his recent remarks about the “Indian state.” The complaint, lodged by Monjit Chetia, accuses Gandhi of undermining India’s sovereignty and integrity with statements allegedly designed to incite rebellion. The case, filed under Sections 152 and 197(1)d of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertains to actions threatening national unity and public order. Chetia contends that Gandhi’s remark—”his fight is against the Indian state itself”—crosses the boundaries of free speech and fosters a narrative harmful to the nation’s stability.
“This statement is not only provocative but also poses a grave threat to public peace and national security. It encourages subversive activities and undermines the authority of the Indian state,” Chetia stated in his complaint. He further alleged that the comments reflect frustration over the Congress party’s repeated electoral setbacks, claiming Gandhi is resorting to divisive rhetoric to delegitimize the government. The alleged remarks were made on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Congress’ new headquarters in New Delhi, reportedly in response to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s comments on India’s independence.
While the BJP has strongly criticized Gandhi, accusing him of attempting to erode the nation’s democratic fabric, the Congress is yet to issue an official response.
