The Assam Police today detained writer Sikha Sarma in connection with a case linked to social media posts made about late music icon Zubeen Garg. Police officials said Sarma was taken into custody from her apartment in the Patharquarry area of Guwahati earlier in the day. The action followed a First Information Report (FIR) filed on Sunday by Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of the late singer. In her complaint, she alleged that Sarma had posted objectionable and defamatory content about Zubeen Garg on social media platforms.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered at the police station under Case No. 2/26, invoking several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 152, 196, 299, 351, 352, 353 and 356. Following the registration of the case, the Crime Branch moved swiftly and detained the writer from her residence for questioning.Police sources said the detention was part of the initial legal process and that Sarma would be questioned in detail regarding the posts mentioned in the FIR. Officials added that all steps were being taken as per law and that the matter was being examined carefully.Meanwhile, members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fans’ Forum were seen at the Dispur Police Station on Sunday. The group extended support to the complainant and demanded strict action, stating that any content they consider disrespectful to the late singer should be dealt with firmly.
