FIR Filed Against BJP Leader for Assaulting Women Congress Workers During ‘Xomoy Poribortonor’ Yatra

Three women leaders of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today lodged an FIR at Tezpur Sadar Police Station against a BJP leader and workers for allegedly carrying out a brutal attack on women Congress leaders and workers on February 7 at Bordubia in Bihuguri under Sonitpur district.

It may be mentioned that when the ‘Xomoy Poribortonor’ Yatra entered Sonitpur district, BJP workers armed with sticks allegedly attempted to vandalise the vehicle in which APCC President Gaurav Gogoi was travelling. When Congress workers tried to resist the attack, BJP workers reportedly assaulted the women Congress workers and even attempted to tear off their clothes.

The FIR further states that BJP workers used abusive language against the women leaders and workers and made obscene gestures. It has also been alleged that when a journalist tried to record the entire incident, BJP workers snatched away his camera and microphone and physically assaulted him.

In connection with the incident, Congress leaders Rupa Kalita, Trishna Bora Kakoti and Sampurna Saikia filed the FIR, naming 10 individuals along with photographic evidence. The BJP workers named in the complaint are Indukalpa Hazarika, Amitabh Saikia, Rakesh Nath, Bappa Ghosh, Kamakhya Bora, Mohan Das, Pranjal Sut, Bintu Hussain and Basanti Devi.

Speaking to the media after filing the FIR, the Congress leaders demanded justice and called for the immediate arrest of the accused persons.
