With the theme “The Earth is Our Mother and We Are Her Children,” a three-day film festival titled ‘Sol’ will be organized by Seemanta Chetana Mancha Purvottar in collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Department of the Assam Government. The festival aims to promote, preserve and document traditional customs and practices that continue to shape the cultural identity of communities across the region.
The announcement was made at a function held at Keshav Dham, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati, by festival president and retired IPS officer Pradip Kumar, festival director and former IAS officer Monita Borgohain, Director of Cultural Affairs Rahul Chandra Das, Deputy Secretary Nayana Bora, and Seemanta Chetana Mancha Purvottar general secretary Dr Binita Bhagawati.
The film festival will be held on March 18, 19 and 20, 2027, at Jyoti Chitraban, Kahilipara.
Organizers said the festival is being held for the second time with the objective of portraying, through the language of cinema, the deep spiritual relationship between land, people and culture. The initiative seeks to bring to wider audiences the beliefs, folk traditions, cultural practices and land-centric customs of the diverse ethnic communities of Northeast India through documentary films.
Following the success of the inaugural edition held last year, participants in this year’s competition will be required to submit documentaries of 18 to 20 minutes focusing on land-based traditions of any community or ethnic group from Northeast India.
Through the festival, themed around the concept of ‘Atma’ (Soul), the organizers aim to strengthen national unity while presenting endangered cultural heritage, traditional modes of worship and indigenous knowledge systems in an authentic and accessible manner.
