In the aftermath of the death of Assamese singer-composer Zubeen Garg, Assam’s publishing scene has experienced a remarkable increase in books focused on his life, music, and legacy. Within three months of his passing, a diverse array of titles—including songs, poetry, and biographies—has emerged, especially highlighted at the Guwahati book fair where these works dominate sales. A notable publication, Zubeener Gadya, was recently launched, featuring prose writings by Zubeen Garg, both published and unpublished. Inaugurated by his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and his sister, Pami Barthakur, this book aims to ensure authenticity and respect for Zubeen Garg’s intellectual legacy amidst concerns about unauthorized publications. The project, published by Assam Publishing Company, includes contributions from outside Assam and features illustrations by Kolkata artist Roddur, enriching the narrative of Garg’s life.
Edited by researcher Manjit Rajkonwar, Zubeener Gadya compiles diverse writings reflecting Zubeen Garg’s philosophy, insights, and emotions over various life stages. With a foreword by Garima Saikia, the book emphasizes the significance of Garg’s prose, portraying him as a thoughtful writer with a sincere voice. The collection delves into his memories, thoughts on relationships, and social reflections, presenting an intimate view of his life beyond music. Zubeener Gadya aspires to connect readers to Zubeen Garg’s essence while advocating for the preservation of Assamese culture, marking a significant addition to the literature surrounding the artist. This work stands as a deep exploration of his inner world, resonating with those seeking to cherish his legacy.
